My mattress saga/mission- 5 years ago I got married in London and moved into my inlaws’ home, in my husbands bedroom I found a bed mattress like no other because I would sleep like a baby and awake feeling fresh and completely ache less. However we only stay there for a few weeks of the year abd live in the US. First we had a mattress my husband had from before we married, it was an average mattress from a bed store and was fine for 2-3 years, it wasn’t special and after 3 years it started bothering us and giving us aches And pains. So we decided to buy a new mattress, and as New Yorkers went straight to Macy’s and tried out a few of their fancy mattresses recommended by the ‘matters expert’ there. After.a few hours of trying a couple out we chose a $500 Serta plush mattress- we bought it, received it and within a few days we knew it was a bad buy, we contacted Macy’s and requested an exchange. We lost $70 delivery and paid another $70 for delivery of our new $600 Simmons Beautyrest firm mattress. We received it and thought it was ok and since it wasn’t really bad we weren’t going to invest more money and hassle on it. However as the months went by we only regretted more buying it and wished we could change it. A year and a half later we decided it was enough- the uncomfortable nights of bad sleep, tossing and turning and waking with aches and pains. We would just look forward to going to London to visit family and sleep like babies on a cloud like mattress that never felt hot, damp, bumpy, hard or too soft. Finally I asked my mother in law where she bought that mattress from, and to my surprise she said ‘ikea’ and although we couldn’t find the exact name she knew it was a spring with foam, active response firm mattress- so after careful research on Ikea.com we thought the closest would be the sultan hallen (hogla and hanestad also came close) but after trying them it in store we were pretty certain hallen was the one. We bought a king for $350- no fancy ‘mattress specialist’ and no fancy price tag, we had it delivered 2 days later and after one night sleeping on it I know we have found our ‘cloud’ which we sleep like babies on! It’s firm but not hard, hugs you and moulds to your curves, it’s cool and dry (no feeling if dampness or heat) and when we move or turn it doesn’t disturb the other. Even if I can afford a $1000 mattress I will always buy an ikea mattress, even if it gives me just 3-5 years (just say) you can afford to buy another because price is so good. The Hallen is good for all types of sleepers as I am a stomach sleeper and husband is a back sleeper, it’s firm but not hard and it’s very flat not bumpy .

I had an expensive Simmons beautyrest for many years and it was great. But when I visited my brother in San Diego, I noticed that I slept better on his guest mattress. It was firm like my mattress but somehow felt better against my body and my hip problem disappeared the next day. I checked the tag and it was an Ikea Sultan Hallen. I can afford any mattress and I was leaning toward memory foam, but this mattress felt just right. I cant speak to how long it will last, but I would buy another tomorrow if this one were stolen or destroyed.
